Croque Madame

A croque madame is the perfect brunch sandwich to absolutely wow your brunch guests. With thick slices of artisan bread, gourmet cheese oozing out of every corner and topped with a sunny side up farm fresh egg… this sandwich is the definition of delicious.

 

Ingredients:

1/4 cup butter

1/4 cup flour

1 1/2 cup milk, room temperature

1/4 teaspoon ground mustard

pinch of nutmeg

10 slices of thickly sliced bread

10 slices thick black forest ham

3 cups gruyere cheese

1/4 cup grated parmesan

Directions:

Sauce:

  1. Melt butter in saucepan over medium heat. When melted, whisk in flour and simmer, stirring constantly until bubbling for three minutes.

  2. Slowly pour in milk will stirring, bringing to a boil. Reduce heat to medium low and continue to stir until thickened.

  3. Remove from heat, stir in 1/2 cup of gruyere cheese and season with salt, pepper, nutmeg and ground mustard.

Sandwiches:

  1. Preheat oven to 400’

  2. Spread one side of 5 bread slices with sauce. Place on baking sheet, sauce side up.

  3. Top with ham, gruyere and parmesan.

  4. Spread one side of remaining 5 bread slices with sauce and place on top, sauce side up. Top with gruyere and parmesan.

  5. Bake for 5 minutes until cheese is melted, then broil until top is golden brown.

  6. Remove from oven and top with fried egg, cooked to your liking.

Notes:

Feel free to adjust the amount of cheese per your taste.
